چکیده
Impact of Alcohol Abuse on the Adaptive Immune System| 185 In the United States, alcohol use disorder (AUD) is the third-leading cause of preventable death. It is associated with increased susceptibility to bacterial pneumonia; viral infections, such as HIV and hepatitis C virus (HCV); and increased postoperative morbidity and mortality. This increased susceptibility is mediated in part by functional alterations in various cells of the immune system. The immune system is broadly divided into two branches: innate and adaptive immunity. The innate immune system represents the first line of host defense and is necessary for inducing the adaptive immune response. The adaptive immune system can be subdivided further into cellular and humoral immunity. The main components of cellular immunity are CD4 and CD8 T cells. CD4 T cells play a critical role in the activation and differentiation of macrophages, CD8 T cells, and B cells. CD8 T cells, on the other hand, are essential for eliminating cells infected with intracellular pathogens, as well as cancer cells. Humoral immunity is mediated by B cells, which produce antibodies to eliminate extracellular microorganisms and prevent spread of infections. This review will summarize the impact of chronic heavy drinking or AUD as well as of moderate alcohol consumption on adaptive immunity and discuss future areas of research in this rapidly evolving field.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a complex neurological disease and its prevalence is about 2 million in the world. Neuroinflammation plays a key role in MS. Vitamins are essential nutrients that have effective role on immune system including activation of lymphocyte and differentiation of T-helper cell. Vitamin D is a micronutrient that is effective on immune function. Deficiently of Vitamin D is a ...
متن کاملDetermination of lymphocytes surface markers in patients with thermal burns and the influence of burn size on mononuclear cell subsets
Background: Thermal burn injuries impair the host defence system. Hence, in the present study, we aimed at investigating the changes in the number and phenotype of peripheral blood lymphocyte populations (T, B, and natural killer cells) and their subpopulations in patients with thermal burns and determining the relationships with different sizes of total body surface area (TBSA). ...
متن کاملEffect of Anti-CD3/CD28 Dynabeads and Allogeneic PBMCs on Expansion of Anti-MUC1 Chimeric Receptor T Cells
Background and purpose: In recent years, immunotherapy using chimeric antigen receptor T cells (CAR T cells) has been considered as a novel and promising treatment for some diseases, especially cancer. The CAR T cell production is a multi-step, complex, time-consuming, and costly process. One of the most important steps in production of CAR T cells is expansion of these cells at appropriate num...
متن کاملP 141: Mesenchymal Stem Cells as Treatment in Neuroinflammatory Disease
Mesenchymal stem cells can be obtained from deferent tissues like adipose tissue, umbilical cord, placenta, skin, bone marrow, etc. These cells have regulatory effects on all types of immune cells such as dendritic cell, natural killers and lymphocytes. Mesenchymal stem cells induce inhibitory phenotypes of Antigen Presenting Cells (APCs) following their activity. They also change T cells pheno...
متن کاملMultiple Myeloma Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stromal Cells Inhibit CD8+ T Cell Function in a Process that May Implicate Fibroblast Activation Protein α
Background: Multiple myeloma (MM) is a malignant plasma cell proliferative disorder with limited immunotherapy treatment because of T cell dysfunction. Objective: To investigate the immunomodulatory function of bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells (MM-BMSCs) on CD8+ T cells. Methods: Proliferation and cytotoxicity were detected by c...
